A Little Cement Education for the Future Cement Trader

1. Don't Start By Sourcing Your Cement on Alibaba. Alibaba can be a great resource but there are too many jokers/losers wanna be cement agents lurking there. All the cement prices you see there are far too low.
2. There is a Cement Shortage EVERYWHERE. Europe is short cement, Africa is short cement. This is your basic first economics class: low supply + high demand = high cost.
3. Cement from China can be obtained...again be wary of the con...and you never know: there is a lesson to be learned from the lead laden Barbie doll story. Get a good contact on the ground that speaks your language.
4. The price of cement itself at the factory door may not be expensive...but did you think a cement carrier was cheap? Easy to get your hands on? They aren't fueled by thin air. The cost of such a vessel varies daily as well.

Lesson Over

To be Frank: I don't earn my keep from this blog. I trade commodities (especially cement) and I represent a few Chinese cement factories. I am happy to give further assistance. Post a message if you want. I don't post my email here anymore. There is too much junk that lands in my inbox when I do.

Hey,

Am doing some research into the price of cement in Uganda compared to other countries nationally. Are you able to give me (or tell me where I could find) some approximate prcies for a 50kg bag? Preferably a couple of countries in East Africa, and some dotted around the globe, ie China, India, US etc.... Really appreciate your help,

Peter

Hello

Saw your comments on the perils of Alibaba etc and agree that I have found same trend.A lot of people all wanting strings of bank docs and no secrets revealed and no certain country of origin.

We are a serious company in Mozambique looking for a supplier to send us a ship(12500 to 20 000 tons with a two port delivery(Beira and Maputo)every six to eight weeks with ongoing contract.

We are a retailer with our own shops and currently sell cement. If we do a deal we want to know the factory,we want a realtionship to know we can trust as to move away from our current supplier without long term commitment from a supplier can be very unhealthy for our company.

In China lots of special prices but no shippers and so the story goes on.

Please contact me if you can help.kevin@construa.co.mz

Dear Samuel

Nice blog and interesting to see that someone does a job with passion. I can see that because you go travelling around to find reliable sources and make long term relationships with serious partners. Its my way of doing business as well.
Making business with people over the phone which you never saw is allways risky and time consuming. Communication, trust and knowledge makes the deal come true.

I understand totally that you dont want to publish your email but is it possible to get some advice from you without the whole world reading it?

Like to hear from you

Hi Samuel

It's great that you offer advice to newbies like myself, because most traders are too busy chasing the Big Deal to give a shit for their fellow humans. I've been trading commodity futures for some time now, but I'm itching to get involved in trading the real thing. Oil is too politicized, so I'm looking at cement. This means I have to fly to China or Malaysia to find a decent supplier that can live up to specifications and delivery. I haven't a clue where to start my research, because on the net you don't know who are the sheisters and who are real. Any suggestions as to where I can start looking for a good supplier?

Many thanks

Hi Sam!

Thank you for the blog. We are a small firma from Germany and as we are emigrants from Russia and Ukrain we have many Customers from the countries. Six monthes we trying to find a real volumes of portland cemert CEM I 42,5 N or R but we cannot find a real supplier. The situation is more difficult as our customers don't want to buy cement from China. And all Internet is full with offers for the cement from Ukrain and Russia. This is bullshit. It was 3 years ago. Today no export from these countries only import. And one more advice: when you see an offer for selling million tons with exact chemical composition this is nonsence too. Every plant has it's own composition of cement and noone plant will give you whole year quantity. So you have to buy from several plants.
If anybody can offer us the real cement from concrete plant in the phase of negotiation but not after the LC opening pls send us a message. Our Email gerbhandel@gmail.com

One more lot of thanks to you, Sam. Your blog is a drop of good sence in the bucket of nonsence in Internet cement trading.

Hi Sam. Although I have sufficient experience in the use of cement due to the industry I am in, I am a relative newbie trader/broker. I've made the observation you stated, i.e. too many fakes & cons on Alibaba & throughout the web.

I would like to find some reliable sources. Please email me and I can provide more details.

Dear Sam

Your blog is really enlightening indeed and fits my problem like a fist on the eye! We are a company making some research for a client of ours who wants to import a large amount of cement to the East for a big project. We are talking >500k metric tons. The client has an offer on the table but it looks to good to be true even though the paper work seems reliable. As you mentioned the rule should be: demand going up, supply shortening, result high prices. In this case however vis versa seems to be the case. I would like to hear your opinion on some elements that seem doggy to me. Any possibility we can get in contact besides using the blog?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Best regards,
Marcel

If anyone in the North Africa, Middle East, Russia and South Eastern European region is having problems finding a real supplier, please contact me at yaerim@aryaexport.com. We deal with only serious buyers so please have the necessary paperwork ready. Been doing this for 7 years so I know bullshit when I smell it.

Oh, by the way. Talked with several high level cement guys and buyers expecting the annual August/September price drop are in for a rude awakening. US Dollar weakness is going to keep cement prices high this fall and winter.
